Fishing Report Boca Grande – September 2026
September is a great time to fish both inshore and offshore here in Boca Grande and Southwest Florida. Water temperatures are still warm, plenty of bait is around, and there are a variety of species to target. As we move through the month, the first signs of the transition from summer into fall begin to show, bringing some excellent fishing opportunities both along the coast and out in the Gulf.
Inshore Fishing Report
Inshore fishing around Boca Grande, Placida, and Englewood continues to be productive as we move through September. Water temperatures are still warm, bait is plentiful, and fishing the right tides and times of day can produce some great action.
Redfish
Redfish have been holding throughout the backcountry, along mangrove shorelines, around oyster bars, and in sandy potholes. We’re also starting to see more fish grouping up as we move closer to fall. Higher tides have been especially productive for targeting fish tight to the mangroves.

Snook
Snook fishing continues to be good throughout the area. Fish can be found around mangrove shorelines, docks, passes, creek mouths, and other areas with good moving water. Early mornings and strong tidal movement have been producing some of the better bites.

Trout, Snapper, Pompano & Sheepshead
For anglers looking to bring home some fresh fish for dinner, we focus on several species depending on what’s biting, including:
- Spotted Seatrout
- Mangrove Snapper
- Pompano
- Sheepshead
Trout have been steady across the grass flats, particularly around deeper grass and potholes. Mangrove snapper continue to provide good action around docks, structure, mangrove shorelines, and deeper holes. Pompano can also show up along sandy edges and passes when conditions are right. Sheepshead are always a possibility around structure, although we typically see the better numbers as the water begins cooling later in the year.
Live shrimp and small baitfish fished under a cork or free-lined have been producing, along with light-tackle artificials. Paying attention to the tides and moving water continues to be one of the biggest keys to putting fish in the boat this time of year.
Offshore Fishing Report
For those looking to get out in the Gulf, September has been producing some great fishing both nearshore and offshore out of Boca Grande. Water temperatures are running 85–90 degrees, bait is plentiful, and there’s a good variety of fish available depending on how far you want to go.
Nearshore Fishing
The nearshore snapper and Key West grunt bite has been good, providing steady action and plenty of opportunities to put some fish in the cooler. Mangrove snapper, lane snapper, and Key West grunts have been the main targets around nearshore structure, reefs, and areas of hard bottom.
Offshore Fishing
Farther offshore, the fishing has been great. Red grouper, gag grouper, big mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, amberjack, and more have all been producing on our deeper offshore trips.
Gag grouper and greater amberjack are both open to harvest in September, giving anglers a great opportunity to target two of the Gulf’s hardest-fighting offshore species. Gag grouper have been holding around ledges, reefs, wrecks, and hard bottom, while amberjack can be found around deeper wrecks, reefs, towers, and other offshore structure.
Live bait and a variety of bottom-fishing techniques have been producing, and on the better weather days we’ve been able to push farther offshore and find some really good action.
Conditions & Outlook
Water temperatures are currently running 85–90 degrees throughout much of the area. With the water this warm, getting an early start and concentrating on good tidal movement can make a big difference.
As we move through September and closer to fall, we should begin to see some subtle changes in water temperatures and bait movement. With gag grouper season coming to an end after September, now is a great time to get offshore and take advantage of the season while it’s still open.
